How Much Time Are You Spending On Facebook?

You sit down to leisurely scroll your Facebook feed and next thing you know, an hour of your time has been drained by mindless cat videos and your high school acquaintance’s vacation album. With growing worries over social media addiction, Facebook has unveiled a new tool.

Your Time on Facebook’ gives users a real-time display of how much time they spent on the site, sets usage limits, and sends notifications when users have surpassed their pre-set time limit. Users will also have access to dashboard which shows a seven-day view of time spent on Facebook.

“We’re always working on new ways to help make sure people’s time on Facebook is time well spent.”

Facebook is not alone in their concentration on ‘meaningful interactions’. Last month during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple debuted the Screen Time app which provides users a weekly activity summary on how they’ve used their iPhone or iPad. It also gives parents the ability to set allowances for their children’s app usage.

Zuckerberg said on an earnings call that recent News Feed algorithm changes “reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day”, but insists that not all time spent on Facebook is a bad thing. While sharing, commenting, and chatting can make users feel more connected, there is also a downside when usage becomes problematic, like checking social media while driving or when it takes away from interactions with your friends and family.

‘Your Time on Facebook’ and Apple’s ‘Screen Time’ app confirms a new focus and commitment from tech giants to help it’s users self-police their usage and combat social media addiction.
